It&#8217;s 2022, and Google Fi is now available to anyone who has a working smartphone.<\/p>\n<p>MNVOs are different because they don&#8217;t own the network they run on. We don&#8217;t have MNVOs in Nigeria, but basically that&#8217;s what Google Fi is. It runs on T-Mobile and US Cellular\u2019s networks in the US.<\/p>\n<h2>Availability in Africa<\/h2>\n<p>Is Google Fi available in Africa? Nigeria, to be specific. <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><a style=\"color: #ff6600;\" href=\"https:\/\/g.co\/fi\/r\/1UFKJ4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Click here to verify for yourself<\/a>.<\/span> Yes. I subscribed for a google fi plan but cancelled when I realized Nigeria was going to make transactions in USD difficult. But yes, Google Fi is very much present as confirmed in the screenshot below:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9790\" src=\"https:\/\/pishondesigns.org\/Dbase\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/googlefi-naij1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1360\" height=\"653\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pishondesigns.org\/Dbase\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/googlefi-naij1.jpeg 1360w, https:\/\/pishondesigns.org\/Dbase\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/googlefi-naij1-600x288.jpeg 600w, https:\/\/pishondesigns.org\/Dbase\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/googlefi-naij1-768x369.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/pishondesigns.org\/Dbase\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/googlefi-naij1-1280x615.jpeg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1360px) 100vw, 1360px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>But em, there&#8217;s a caveat.<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>To use your phone for calls, texts, and data outside the US, you must activate your Google Fi account and use Fi in the US (territories not included). You don&#8217;t need to change your phone&#8217;s settings or turn on international coverage each time you travel. &#8211; <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><em><a style=\"color: #ff6600;\" href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/fi\/answer\/6157794\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Source<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-2177321403470136\" crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script><br \/>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block; text-align: center;\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-2177321403470136\" data-ad-slot=\"7674495139\"><\/ins><br \/>\n<script>\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><\/p>\n<h2>How does Google Fi Work?<\/h2>\n<p>Fi uses your phone&#8217;s &#8220;Wi-Fi assistant&#8221; to constantly search for and connect to good Wi-Fi networks. Fi will also take any solid connection and route it through a VPN for your safety.<\/p>\n<h2>Plans and Pricing<\/h2>\n<p>You can use your phone in over 200 destinations. For international use:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cellular calls are $0.20 per minute. (83 Naira\/minute, as of August 2022)<\/li>\n<li>Texts are included.<\/li>\n<li>You can make calls over Wi-Fi. The rates for calling over Wi-Fi internationally depend on the country or region you\u2019re calling.<\/li>\n<li>For specific rates, go to Google Voice calling rates.<\/li>\n<li>Free calls between the US, Canada and Mexico.<\/li>\n<li>See full plans <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><a style=\"color: #ff6600;\" href=\"https:\/\/fi.google.com\/about\/plans?pli=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a><\/span>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: #ccffcc;\">Before traveling abroad, confirm if the country you plan to visit blocks Wi-Fi calls.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>If you plan to stay abroad for an extended period of time, we recommend you use a local carrier until you can return to the US. We grant exceptions to military and State Department employees who serve abroad.<\/p>\n<h2>Does Nigeria allow Wi-Fi Calls?<\/h2>\n<p>Yes we do, surprisingly. One advantage Google Fi has over other cellular networks is that it offers Wi-Fi calls. Sorta like what WhatsApp does, but a little different.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Wi-Fi calling is a voice service that lets users place and receive calls over a wireless internet connection, as opposed to using a cellular signal. Smartphone users can make use of Wi-Fi calling to talk and text on their smartphones from locations where it&#8217;s difficult to reach a strong cellular phone signal. &#8211; <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><em><a style=\"color: #ff6600;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techtarget.com\/whatis\/definition\/Wi-Fi-calling#:~:text=Wi%2DFi%20calling%20is%20a,a%20strong%20cellular%20phone%20signal.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Source<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In 2019, <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Tizeti<\/span>, a leading internet service provider (ISP) in Nigeria, launched a voice calling service, <a href=\"https:\/\/wificall.ng\/pricing.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">WifiCall.ng<\/span><\/a>, that will enable users to make and receive crystal clear, unlimited voice call from and to anywhere in the world. <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">So far, they are the ONLY ones in NIGERIA to offer this service.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Think of it this way,\u00a0<em>A residential consumer with existing internet connection can make hi-quality crystal clear calls at cheaper costs when there is limited or no access to a free OTT service like Skype or WhatsApp.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">So, Google Fi has great fertilizer to run on, so to speak &#8211; though <em>WifiCall by Tizeti<\/em> may actually be a rival to the success of the Google mobile powerhorse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: #ccffcc;\"><strong>Wi-Fi calling might not be available if you&#8217;re not using a device Designed for Fi.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Can all phone models run Google Fi?<\/h2>\n<p>No.<\/p>\n<p>Only unlocked devices can be used with Google Fi. If you purchased your phone through Google Fi or the Google Store, your device is unlocked.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>At a minimum, all Android models\u00a0must run Android 7.0, have LTE bands 2 and 4, and support VoLTE.<\/li>\n<li>All iPhone and iPad models must run iOS 13\u00a0or higher.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Designed for Fi phones are sold by Google Fi or the Google Store and give you the full Fi experience.
