But iPhones don&#8217;t come cheap, and so some would rather patronise the used iPhone market. But buying a used iPhone means that it could be stolen, fake or damaged &#8211; so this is a guide to help you know for things to check when buying a used iPhone in 2022.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This is a sequel to the post on things to check when <a href=\"https:\/\/pishondesigns.org\/Dbase\/things-to-check-when-buying-a-used-macbook-in-2022\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">buying a used MacBook in 2022.<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>What Kind of iPhone is worth buying used?<\/h2>\n<p>Any iPhone from iPhone 6S is a great option. I prefer iPhones, because unlike Androids which sees updates end after 2 years, they will be updated for years and years to come, so you&#8217;re safe. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.in\/tech\/apps\/news\/whatsapp-will-not-work-on-few-apple-samsung-lg-and-sony-devices-from-november-1\/articleshow\/86061348.cms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">From Nov 2021, the iPhone 4s will stop receiving WhatsApp updates<\/a>, so don&#8217;t get that.<\/p>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block; text-align: center;\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-2177321403470136\" data-ad-slot=\"5058759332\"><\/ins><br \/>\n<script>\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><\/p>\n<p>You can get an<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>iPhone 6S<\/li>\n<li>iPhone 7,<\/li>\n<li>iPhone 8<\/li>\n<li>iPhone X, XS or XS Max, XR<\/li>\n<li>iPhone 11, 12<\/li>\n<li>iPhone 13.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Things to check when buying a used iPhone.<\/h2>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800080;\">1. &#8211; Check that the phone is not stolen.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9397\" src=\"https:\/\/pishondesigns.org\/Dbase\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/activation-lock.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"694\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Apple prevents stolen iPhones from being activated by new users with its Activation Lock feature, which is turned on when Find My iPhone is activated. But you&#8217;ll only know if a phone is Activation Locked after you buy it when you can&#8217;t unlock the iCloud-locked iPhone.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>To check if an iPhone is stolen, you need an IMEI number which you can get by dealing *#06#. It is usually a 15-digit number.<\/li>\n<li>When you have the number, go to the <a href=\"https:\/\/stolenphonechecker.org\/spc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CTIA Stolen Phone Checker<\/a> website and enter the IMEI number into the field provided.<\/li>\n<li>The website returns a <strong>green<\/strong> Not reported lost or stolen or a <strong>red<\/strong> notice that the phone has been reported as lost or stolen.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If it is Red, find another iPhone.<\/p>\n<p>Insist that the seller activates the iPhone by entering their password. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/439570\/how-to-remove-activation-lock-on-an-iphone\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Activation Lock can be removed from an iPhone<\/a> by disabling \u201cFind My iPhone\u201d under Settings &gt; [Owner\u2019s Name] &gt; Find My.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800080;\">2. &#8211; Check that the phone is not Carrier locked.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9396\" src=\"https:\/\/pishondesigns.org\/Dbase\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/carrier-lock-iphone-settings.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"622\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This is one of the reasons why buying a used iPhone online is a bad idea.\u00a0To find out if your phone is carrier locked, do the following:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Open the Settings app on the iPhone in question.<\/li>\n<li>Scroll down and tap General.<\/li>\n<li>Tap About.<\/li>\n<li>Scroll to the bottom and look for Carrier Lock. <strong>If it says No SIM restrictions, then your iPhone is unlocked<\/strong> and you&#8217;re free to use any carrier or cell service.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800080;\">3. &#8211; Check the Battery Life.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pishondesigns.org\/Dbase\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/battery_health.jpg.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9393\" src=\"https:\/\/pishondesigns.org\/Dbase\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/battery_health.jpg.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"406\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pishondesigns.org\/Dbase\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/battery_health.jpg.webp 650w, https:\/\/pishondesigns.org\/Dbase\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/battery_health.jpg-600x375.webp 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Unlike android phones, iPhone batteries are difficult &#8211; if not impossible to change, so when buying a used iPhone, it is a great idea to check the battery life first. Anything less than 80% isn&#8217;t ideal.<\/p>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block; text-align: center;\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-2177321403470136\" data-ad-slot=\"5058759332\"><\/ins><br \/>\n<script>\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Go to Settings &gt; Battery.<\/li>\n<li>Tap Battery Health. iPhone displays information about your battery&#8217;s capacity, peak performance, and whether your battery needs to be serviced.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<blockquote><p><strong>TIP<\/strong>: If possible, check that the iPhone charges normally too; consider carrying a portable battery and Lightning cable if you have them.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If the seller advertises that the battery has been replaced recently, you can check the parts and service history to verify whether or not a genuine Apple part was used. Head to Settings &gt; General &gt; About and look for the relevant section beneath the \u201cModel Number\u201d field.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pishondesigns.org\/Dbase\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/parts_history.png.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9395\" src=\"https:\/\/pishondesigns.org\/Dbase\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/parts_history.png.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"351\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pishondesigns.org\/Dbase\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/parts_history.png.webp 650w, https:\/\/pishondesigns.org\/Dbase\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/parts_history.png-600x324.webp 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800080;\">4. &#8211; Check other peripherals<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Things like <strong>Face ID, Water Damage, Microphone, Speakers, side buttons, mute switch<\/strong> etc are not so easy to detect esp as you&#8217;re buying a used iPhone, so you have to be a bit smart about that one. Of course, since its a used iPhone no one expects it to be perfect, but all the same, you want to get value for your money, so it is better to be safe than sorry.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>You can easily <strong>test the microphone<\/strong> by recording something using Apple\u2019s built-in Voice Memos app. Test the speaker by playing back the recording, previewing a ringtone under <strong>Settings &gt; Sounds &amp; Haptics.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It\u2019s also a good idea to check the earpiece volume, and the only way of doing so is by making a phone call.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800080;\">5. &#8211; Is it a used or refurbished iPhone?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>When buying a used iPhone, you can check whether your iPhone is a refurbished model by heading to <strong>Settings &gt; General &gt; About and looking at the \u201cModel Number\u201d entry.<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>If this number starts with an F, it\u2019s been refurbished by Apple or a carrier.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It&#8217;s not necessarily a bad thing, but it&#8217;s nice to know.<\/p>\n<h2>Risks When Buying Second-Hand iPhones<\/h2>\n<p>iPhone metadata, such as the IMEI number, doesn&#8217;t change with ownership. With this, if any fraudulent or unlawful activities were done on the device by previous owners, you may be contacted by authorities to prove your innocence.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, it\u2019s becoming increasingly common to find very authentic-looking fake electronic devices. One of the reasons why many second-hand electronics are so cheap is that some of their parts may no longer be original.
