The ultimate guide to building with AI and not losing your brain. We OG designers really have been battling with the new school \u2018everyone can build an app\/website\u2019 gang. We\u2019re not hating, we\u2019re just worried, because it feels like seeing a person wearing a medical lab coat without the degree.<\/p>\n

With the rise of claude, chatGPT and everyone feeling like they can build the new Manhattan bridge, we are seeing a rise in ideas and influx of apps – both mobile and web apps – hitting the interwebs. So this post is ME<\/a><\/span><\/strong> giving you free ideas of what you can build, especially if you want something sustainable in the long run.<\/span><\/p>\n

Building with AI. Our own scenario. What did we build?<\/h3>\n

I\u2019ve always wanted a company invoice app that matched all the currencies we deal with, and permanently eliminating the need for subscription. So we built ours. And it looks good. Well, the exception is that WE can code, so even if the AI messed it up, we can tweak it to how we want and not feel like we are in over our heads. So if we can code, why did we build it? Cost and time. AI made it faster and more accessible. And we could do countless iterations because it\u2019s a machine and the brain would not freeze. I guess.<\/p>\n

So what is this guide to building with AI?<\/h3>\n

First, think like a developer. I know you\u2019re not a designer or developer, you just like this new AI thing and feel that you can do something great with it. This guide will help you not make a mistake at least, for a total newbie.<\/p>\n

What do you want to build?<\/h2>\n

If it\u2019s an app, draw it on paper.
\nWhat do you want it to do?
\nHow do you want it to function?
\nWho is the target base?<\/p>\n

I know you are asking me, \u201cwhat can I build for my business? I am not a techie\u201d. That\u2019s fine.<\/p>\n

A non-tech everyday business owner can build things like an invoicing app, booking system, customer database, quote generator, expense tracker, simple CRM, inventory tracker, client portal, chatbot, lead-capture tool, order tracker, staff scheduler, or automated email follow-up system.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Same question if it is a website<\/a><\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not about having high end exclusive technology right at your fingertips but being able to direct it fairly and use it well.<\/span><\/p>\n

I asked AI – specifically, Claude – what ideas exist for non techies to build, and it said:<\/p>\n

Things you can build without touching code, you\u2019re welcome:<\/p>\n

  1. A custom GPT or Claude project trained on your business \u2014 your FAQ, pricing, policies \u2014 so it answers customer questions in your voice, 24\/7. This alone replaces a lot of repetitive email\/DM traffic.<\/li>\n
  2. Automated intake and follow-up. Someone fills out a form \u2192 AI drafts a personalized response or proposal \u2192 sits in your drafts folder for you to approve and send. Tools like Zapier or Make connect this to your existing email\/CRM with zero code.<\/li>\n
  3. A simple chatbot on your website using no-code tools (Chatbase, Voiceflow, or even a Claude-powered widget someone builds you once) that qualifies leads before they ever talk to a human.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Don\u2019t be afraid to cancel and start over again.<\/h2>\n

    I know you are saving credits and what not, but really, the first edition or version is always really bad. You have to come correct. Think like a stylist. We had so many variations of our invoice app that it pissed me off but when the final design came out it was worth it.<\/p>\n

    You have to think about the end users and the reason you are designing this. If it doesn\u2019t fulfill a need, then dump the idea. But don\u2019t put mediocre stuff into the interwebs.<\/p>\n
