How To Make Money Using Google AdSense

Make Money Using Google AdSense

This is a post on how to make money using Google AdSense.

Google AdSense is something you’ve probably heard can make you a lot of money, but how do you make it work for YOUR blog? Starting a new account with Google AdSense is one of the easiest ways to start monetizing your blog. While Google AdSense might not make you rich, this simple and useful tool is usually the first step bloggers take to earn an income from their blogs.

What is Google AdSense?

Google AdSense is a program run by Google that allows publishers in the Google Network of content sites to serve automatic text, image, video, or interactive media advertisements, that are targeted to site content and audience.

Google AdSense is a free, simple way for website publishers of all sizes to earn money by displaying targeted Google ads on their websites.

To say it more simply,

AdSense is when you place Google Ads on your website, and when a visitor from your website clicks on an ads, Google pays you 68% of what the advertiser pays them. It’s free to sign up.

Wait! So all I need is an AdSense account?

Well, it’s not that simple. Google has to vet you first. And:

  • Do you have a blog more than a year old or maybe not up to but with amazing content?
  • Got more than a 1000 pageviews a day?

Then you qualify.

First, sign up for Google AdSense using your Google Account and give it a try!

After signing up, you will receive an email within a few hours telling you if you passed the review. Then you can proceed to sign in again and get what they call ad codes. These are the codes that will be implemented on your blog to start generating money.

Let’s Talk About Page Views and Traffic First

You can sign up for AdSense but if you’re not having enough traffic then you won’t make a dime. Your blog needs pageviews and impressions to make money. You will get paid for every time a user clicks on the ad. These are called CPC ads.

What is CPC? CPC stands for “cost per click.”

CPC – Cost Per Click – Concept.

By displaying CPC ads with Google AdSense, you receive a set fee every time an ad on your website is clicked by a visitor. The cost per click is set by the advertiser. (This is in contrast to CPM ads, where you’re paid for ad views instead of clicks. CPM means “cost per thousand impressions,” where M is the roman numeral for 1,000.)

CPC is determined by the advertisers. In some competitive niches like finance, marketing, online products etc. advertisers may be willing to pay more per click than others.

CPM: CPM means “Cost Per 1000 Impressions.”

Sometimes advertisers opt for CPM ads instead of CPC and set their price for 1000 ad impressions. And they pay each time their ads appear on any website.

Ok. Let’s go on.

What is a Pageview?

pageview (or pageview hit, page tracking hit) is an instance of a page being loaded (or reloaded) in a browser. Pageviews is a metric defined as the total number of pages viewed.

A page view is what Google counts in your reports every time a user views a page displaying Google ads. We count one page view regardless of the number of ads displayed on that page. – AdSense

For you to make money using Google AdSense, you need at least 500-1000 page views a day.  This is because most advertizers will pay per 1000 impressions, and it may not be much. So if you’re getting 1000 page views per day, it’s enough to get by, for starters.

Page RPM
Page RPM is the average earnings per thousand page views.
Page RPM = (Estimated earnings / Number of page views) * 1000

CTR: Your ad Click-Through Rate is the number of ad clicks divided by the number of individual ad impressions. Suppose you are showing 3 AdSense ads on every page of your website, 1 page view is equal to 3 ad impressions.

CTR = Clicks / Ad Impressions X 100

Suppose, you get 5 clicks out of 500 ad impressions, your CTR would be 1% (5/500X100).

So in order for you to make at least $100/day using AdSense, that’s (N36400 in Nigerian Naira), then:

To make $100 everyday you need 40,000 Page Views/day Or, 400 Clicks a day @ 1% CTR and $0.25 CPC. For 40,000 Page Views you have to produce 500 awesome articles on your website. These pages must attract at least 80 or more page views everyday.

Do the math. Think you can wing it?

So, in conclusion,

If you want to make money using AdSense, you will need more and quality traffic.

The best quality traffic is the traffic you get from search engines.

To get more search engine traffic, you will need more posts and more backlinks.

Your posts will have to be high quality or no one with a high quality site would link to them.

Once you have a good amount of High Quality posts, High Quality backlinks and Good amount of search engine traffic, you will make money using Google AdSense.

Once you understand all of the above, then go ahead and:

Add the AdSense codes to your Blog

Adding the codes gotten from your AdSense portal all depends on the layout of your blog.

You need to determine where you want to show the ad. Ads can be placed in posts, on pages, sidebars, header, and the footer. They can be above or below the content, in-between the content, or you can set the content to wrap around the ads. The ad blocks can be placed by hand-coding, plugins, themes, shortcodes, and more. It’s all about preference.

That’s all! Once you’ve placed the codes, you are set! As soon as someone clicks on the ads now showing on your website, you get paid! Google pays only when you hit the $100 threshold.

A few Rules though…

Google is strict. If you mess around, they won’t hesitate to ban your account and cancel all payments. To avoid that, follow the rules below like they are from a respected oracle 🙂 —

  1. Don’t click on your own ads.
  2. Google has a list of languages they support. Don’t run your ads on a blog where the language isn’t supported. See list of supported languages here
  3. You can only have 3 ad units on one page.
  4. Don’t send ads using email.
  5. Make sure you don’t use any other contextual advertisement program. Let Google Adsense by your ONLY advertisement program.
  6. Don’t tamper with Adsense code! Changing your Adsense code in anyway is not permitted by Google.
  7. If you place Adsense on a site that distribute copyright content like Movies, songs or any other files, you will get an instant ban.
  8. Don’t buy traffic for your Adsense enabled sites.

Now you can make money from your website using Google AdSense!
